Rape and murder of two Kashmiri girls by Indian army


Undeclared curfew was imposed in Shopian today following violent protests against the alleged rape and murder of a woman and her sister in law late last evening.
The protestors alleged that they were raped by security forces and then killed. Sources close to the doctors, who conducted autopsy of the two bodies, confirmed the rape and murder of the woman and the girl. Separatist leaders have called for a general strike on Monday against the incident
Prior to the imposition of curfew, police fired in air, burst dozens of smoke shells and resorted to lathi charge to disperse the protestors who attacked and ransacked hospital building, and some other governments building and dozens of vehicles. They even made hostage some government officials for some time. Over 50 persons were injured in the clashes.
Earlier, the bodies of Neelofar wife of Shakeel Ahmad Ahangar and her sister-in-law Asiya (11th class student) were found this morning on the bank of Nallah Rambiara. Local people said they had gone to their fruit orchard around 4 P M yesterday and did not return.
The panicky family members launched a search and even approached the police. But there was no trace of Neelofar and Asiya. However, this morning their bodies were recovered from the bank of Nallah Ramibarah.
The locals said that a CRPF camp and an army camp are located near the spot. They alleged that the two females were raped, and then killed by security men and then their bodies thrown there.
As the news about the killing of the two women spread in the town thousands of protestors took to streets. Raising slogans against security forces, government they demanded that the security men behind the double murder be punished.
The bodies of the two deceased were brought to district hospital Shopian for post mortem. As the postmortem was going on the violent mob, demanding the autopsy report, attacked the hospital building, ransacked it, beat the doctors and para medical staff. They also demanded that a special team of doctors be constituted to conduct the post mortem.
After some time the administration sent a team of senior doctors from district hospital Pulwama for conducting the post mortem. The doctors conducted the post mortem amid violent clashes in the whole town.
While the report was not made public, but sources close to the doctors, who conducted the post mortem, said the woman and the girl were raped and then killed. There were visible torture marks on their bodies.
Chief medical officer Pulwama said he will shortly get the postmortem report from the team of doctors. “The doctors will submit the report to concerned deputy commissioner and SP also,” he said.
After the post mortem, the people refused to bury the bodies saying that the post mortem report be made available to them. The protestors continued to clash with the police and paramilitary forces. A number of vehicles, including two hospital ambulances, vehicle of assistant commissioner revenue and tehsildar Shopian were also damaged..
The cops had to repeatedly fire in air, burst smoke shells and resort to cane charge. As some senior officials were made hostage, the authorities imposed undeclared curfew. Heavy deployment of security forces was made to enforce the curfew. The people were asked to remain indoors.
The authorities assured the people that the facts as also post mortem report will be made available by June 1 and assured thorough investigations into the incident. The people got pacified and agreed to bury the bodies this evening amid tense situation.
“The guilty security men should be punished and a murder and rape case registered against them. The police initially tried to give an impression that the two slain females were drowned. But how can anybody get drowned in the nallah which has very low water level,” said Abdul Majid a protestor.
Shops, other business establishments, government offices remained closed in the town. Transport was also off the roads.
Condemning the alleged rape and murder of two women in Shopian chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani urged people in entire Kashmir valley to observe complete strike on Monday. Hurriyat conference chairman (M) Mirwaiz Omar Farooq also called for a complete shutdown over the incident.
It is a heinous and brutal crime. Two of our girls were gang raped by the forces and later killed viciously. We strongly condemn such incident as entire humanity is shocked by this incident,” Geelani said
He called for complete shutdown to protests against the incident.
“I strongly appeal people to observe complete strike bandh on Monday June 1, against the heinous incident and demand complete withdrawal of troops from the entire disputed territory,” he said.
Coming down heavily on those who say strikes are futile, the leader also asked them to show another way to protest.
Chairman Hurriyat (G) said, “How could any Kashmiri remain silent over such inhumane incident? I want to tell those who say that strikes are futile. Strikes are never futile; today I am asking them what to do in such condition to protest the brutal killings.”
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M) has also condemned the killing two women in Shopian district.
“Such incidents have proved that chastity of our women is not safe even in our houses. Such incidents are heart breaking and brutal. We vehemently condemn it,” Mirwaiz said.
He said that such incidents castigate the claims of zero tolerance by so-called government.
“We appeal people to come forward and impress upon world community that such incidents cannot be tolerated,” he said, adding, “We also appeal people to observe complete strike on Monday against the incident.”
Meanwhile Muslim league led by Masrat Alam has also condemned the killing.
“Entire humanity is ashamed by this heart breaking incident and it has stressed urge that until there is complete withdrawal of troops, nothing is secure,” acting chairman of Muslim League, Mohammad Yousuf Mir this newspaper over phone from Shopian.
